"Resilience - Still I Rise"
PUBLIC ART
The title of the sculpture represents the challenges of the past, along with the growth and, development of the city of Winston-Salem, NC. We are a city in a continuous improvement process of building an inclusive community in Arts, Science, Education, Innovation, Technology, and other key areas. Some will see the structure as falling or columns not yet standing tall. This is the process of growth and disruption. Like nature, a city must go through rebirth to come back stronger and better.
It also represents resilience. I strongly relate to all it represents.

Metalmorphosis, Inc - Fabricators
Welding, machining, and metal fabrication
Metal fabrication shop located in Winston-Salem, NC. Specialize in the design, repair, and building of metal products to meet customers’ needs. Metalmorphosis started in 2006, in a small garage, with the intent to provide high-quality workmanship and personal customer service. Metalmorphosis has since grown out of that garage and into a three-bay shop that can handle large-scale projects alongside smaller repair jobs.

Blacksmith and metal working
As a retired mechanical contractor, Paul Spainhour has 45 years of experience in design, fabrication, and installation. This knowledge has served him well, in his current status as a master blacksmith.

Drew Gerstmyer
Architect, GC, and Real Estate
Real Estate broker, and NC General Contractor, enjoys making scrap art from leftover pieces that is found on job sites. His design work appears in curated locations throughout the city as well as strategically bringing undeveloped real estate areas back to life.
Select Engineering, PLLC
Founder / Structural Engineer
Meade Willis serves as owner and Principal of Select Engineering – a structural engineering firm providing services throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Central to Meade’s work is the understanding that architectural design and structural design are inherently interwoven within the building process. This knowledge inspires work towards creative structural engineering solutions in support of architecture and results in structures that meet the client’s goal with particular focus on functionality, efficiency, environmental impact, and aesthetics.
This new Link Apartment building opened Fall 2022 and dedicated the installation"Resilience - Still I Rise". The sculpture is located on 4th near Spruce Street in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.
The sculpture was funded by Grubb Properties and The City of Winston Salem Public Art Commission. Additional materials and support are listed in Sponsors.
It takes a team to take an idea and create from the impossible challenges of the last 2 years. We had to review materials, apply our skills and technical knowledge combined with experience and meet a budget that the supply chain issues challenged regularly. Along with determination - we Rise...
